Over the past day, a number of reports have emerged to suggest that Nintendo will be launching an upgraded version of the Switch at some point next year. The main report comes from Taipei’s Economic Daily News (captured by The Edge Markets), who cited various supply chain sources that have confirmed there’ll be a new version of the Nintendo Switch launching early next year.
Bloomberg have also reported on the news themselves, stating that “the Kyoto-based company has looked into including more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics”. Bloomberg also mention that this new console will also launch with a new line-up of games. Nintendo currently don’t have any big first-party releases confirmed for the rest of the year, so it’s possible that the company is keeping Breath of the Wild 2 and Bayonetta 3 in its back pocket for this new console release.
With the PS5 and Xbox Series X scheduled to launch at the end of this year, Nintendo might find itself lagging behind when it comes to attracting casual players. People do like to buy the new shiny thing, so if Nintendo brings out their own new shiny thing, they’ll be able to remain competitive. Either way, the Nintendo Switch has managed to sell 61 million units since launch as of the end of July. Will you be purchasing a new Nintendo console if it launches next year?
