Nintendo Direct 2015: 19 Things We Learned

Iwata

11. Project Treasure

Katsuhiro Harada from Namco Bandai came on the screen in a trailer featuring slow heavy metal and, quite literally said: “4 Player Co-Op Action. Gameplay Rules: Disarm Traps. Collect Treasure. Free to Download and Start Playing. Accessible to Everyone. Project Treasure.” And he said nothing else. It was the vaguest part of the entire Nintendo Direct and we will hopefully hear more from Mr. Harada in the near-future.

12. Small Downloadable and Indie Games Coming to the eShop

Elliot Quest is an 8-Bit Platformer in the vein of Kid Icarus. It is set to release on the Wii U in February. Blek is an interesting drawing game where you collect colors through interesting puzzles. It has won multiple art awards at shows it has been shown at, and is even being displayed in an art museum. Expect it on the Wii U eShop in February as well. Citizens of Earth is a JRPG that feels right at home alongside the Earthbound series of Mother games. You play as the president of earth and gather a rackety crew of followers to save the world. This one releases on the 3DS and Wii U on January 20th. Gunman Clive 2 is the sequel to the Mega Man styled spaghetti western sleeper hit that released on the 3DS over a year ago, and is now coming back better than ever. The fan following will hopefully flock to this game when it releases on 3DS this January.

Moon Chronicles is an interesting first person shooter for 3DS that is getting more episodical content, all released on the same day sometime this January. Sega 3D Classics is exactly what it sounds like, faithful 3D recreations of classic Sega games. The games included are 3D After Burner 2, 3D Fantasy Zone, 3D OutRun, 3D Fantasy Zone 2, and 3D Thunderblade. All are set to release over the next 3 months (January – March). Etrian Mystery Dungeon is exactly what the Pokemon Series was, but back to the original roots without the Pokemon name attached to it. This one has a vague release date of Spring for 3DS. Story of Seasons is a life and farming simulator, similar to Harvest Moon, though with an emphasis on connecting to other characters in-game and online. This one is set to release in March on the 3DS eShop. Finally, and the only one here getting a physical release on the 3DS, is Fossil Fighters Frontier. It’s similar to Pokemon, in that you find and battle monsters, which are dinosaurs in this game, and train them to defeat your friends in local and online battles. This one hits the Nintendo eShop AND store shelves on March 20th.

13. The New Nintendo 3DS XL (The standard size New 3DS will not come to the US at this time)

As we all rumored, Reggie Fils Amie came onscreen and stole the show with his presentation on the New 3DS. The new handheld will play all 3DS and DS games that were compatible with the original model, and many more that are on the way. Additions include a faster processor, face-tracking 3D, a built-in Amiibo scanner, 4 shoulder buttons, and a C-Stick nub analog input. Oddly, despite all the new features, this one will not release with an A/C Adapter, so if you’re a new adopter to the console, you’ll need to buy one separately. This new rendition of the 3DS will release on February 13th and will be available in Red, Black, and a Silver Monster Hunter 4 special edition exclusive to GameStop. A Majora’s Mask themed one was also announced, but the pre-orders were sold out within hours.

14. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.

This game has a really interesting plot device and gameplay feature. Abraham Lincoln and figures from classic literature and American folklore save the world in a steampunk third person, Turn-Based Strategy game. Yeah, that’s insane. With the New 3DS camera control, it will also be a more intuitive and in-depth experience, and will also include Amiibo support for Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina as playable characters. Expect the game to be out on 3DS on March 15th, and if you pre-order, you’ll also get a Majora’s Mask pin, as seen in the UK’s limited edition of Majora’s Mask.

15. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus

This is an enhanced version of Ace Combat; Assault Horizon on the 3DS with more control added to benefit the New 3DS, more 3D affects to suit the better 3D on the new hardware, and Amiibo support to give your fighter jet character skins based on the character scanned in. This one releases on February 13th alongside the New 3DS console.
