The Nintendo you think you know doesn’t exist anymore: the company has announced another of its licenses is coming to smartphones.

There’s no concrete release date, but Mario Kart Tour will be before the end of the 2019 fiscal year, which means anytime between now and March next year.

“The checkered flag has been raised and the finish line is near. A new mobile application is now in development: Mario Kart Tour! #MarioKartTour Releasing in the fiscal year ending in March 2019.”

That’s all we know, really. There will be karts and heartbreak, which is an album name if there ever was one. Would you prefer to see a paid game like Super Mario Run or a microtransaction-centric effort like Animal Crossing? I will always prefer the former, so it will be interesting to see the direction they take it.

The last Mario Kart game we saw was Mario Kart 8, the Switch upgrade for the Wii U version. It’s one of the platform’s best-sellers, so you can expect big numbers for a smartphone spin-off as well.
