Next Mad Max Movie Will Be A Furiosa Prequel, But No Charlize Theron

The new Furiosa will have big shoes to fill.

Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller is planning to expand the Mad Max universe with a prequel movie based on Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa. This Furiosa prequel is based on the script he and Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Nick Lathouris put together years ago, even before Mad Max: Fury Road was released.

In an interview with The New York Times, he spoke about how the film is an origin story, and that he is searching for an actress in her 20s to take on the role. Miller has reportedly approached Anya Taylor-Joy about joining this project, and while we might speculate that she is being considered for Furiosa, there is no confirmation of this as yet. He did consider using de-ageing technology so that Theron could continue to play the character, but decided against that since he feels the technology isn’t where it needs to be for this to happen.

“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet,” Miller said. “Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley.” Not much is known about Furiosa’s past in Mad Max: Fury Road, but her being one of Immortan Joe’s war captains and then deciding to free his wives despite the risks involved has made her into one of the most bad-ass women in film history.

He plans to get started in the Furiosa film after he’s done with his current movie Three Thousand Years of Longing, starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.
