The New Tomb Raider Film Looks Kind of Okay

Tomb raider reboot

Shortly following the release of its neck-defying poster, Roar Uthaug’s Tomb Raider reboot has just had its first trailer released.

The man with the best name in Hollywood is helming the Alicia Vikander vehicle, which seems more or less like an adaptation of Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 reboot with added Nick Frost.

Check it out below.

Doesn’t exactly look bad, but it doesn’t look amazing either, does it? There seems to be some very wonk CG on display, but Vikander certainly looks the part. Walter Goggins joins Uthaug in the battle for the best name in Hollywood as the big bad of proceedings alongside Dominic West and Daniel Wu.

Here’s the synopsis:

“Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.

“From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Tomb Raider is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero. The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave), with Oscar-winner Graham King (The Departed) producing under his GK Films banner. The film¹s production begins on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.”

What do you think? It’s going to have to do a lot wrong to get it into the fabled halls of bad video game adaptations; it just looks kind of solid. The new Tomb Raider definitely won’t be a masterpiece, but it will surely do enough to entertain for an hour and a half.
