5 Biggest New Movies of November 2023 – Fall Movie Magic

“November at its best—with a sort of delightful menace in the air.”

As we get to the end of the year, this is when the movie studios bring out the big guns. While September and October were a bit disappointing movie-wise, so many movies delayed due to the strikes that were going on, November is definitely more promising, especially since there are movies that didn’t make this list that I’m looking forward to see.

There’s the movie May December with Juliane Moore and Natalie Portman, as well as The Holdovers with Paul Giamatti, which will probably become a Christmas classic in years to come.

Here are the 5 biggest new movies of November 2023.

New Movies of November 2023

1. What Happens Later | November 3rd 2023

Meg Ryan in a rom-com of sorts? It feels like Christmas has come early. Ryan plays Willa, who in a serendipitous turn of events gets stranded at the airport with her former boyfriend, William (David Duchovny). The two reconnect, reluctantly at first as they both have places to be, but then they really dive into a post-mortem of their relationship, and why it couldn’t work for them all those years ago.

It’s like an epilogue of a rom-com, the years later outcome we never get to see, and now we do. Ryan is triple-hatting for this one, donning the director’s cap for her second film, 8 years after the release of her first film Ithaca.

2. The Marvels | November 10th, 2023

Is the superhero genre dead in the water? There’s a certain fatigue surrounding the discourse of these new MCU movies, especially since they’ve scaled back tremendously in 2023. The Marvels will be the third MCU film released this year, and while I believe The Marvels will definitely be better than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it’s difficult to conjure up much enthusiasm when phase 5 has been so uneventful.

The Marvels is a sequel to Captain Marvel, but also a sequel of sorts to WandaVision and Ms. Marvel. Brie Larson is reprising her role as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, in The Marvels, and she will be joined by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau, who gained powers during WandaVision. The three find themselves up against Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), a Kree Accuser who has her sights set on destroying Captain Marvel. Not only will they have to deal with this formidable villain, she’s also tampered their powers so they end up switching places with each other every time they use their powers.

3. The Hunger Games: The Battle of Songbirds and Snakes | November 17th, 2023

We didn’t even know how good we had it when the original The Hunger Games movies were released. All four movies were solid adaptations of the source material, and still holds up on rewatch years later. This year, we’re getting the prequel to that story, one that focuses on the origin story of President Snow.

The Snow family’s reputation and lineage are on the line, since they have fallen from grace in the post-war Capitol. A young Coriolanus Snow is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from District 12. But after Lucy Gray’s charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to change both their fates.

4. Wish | November 22nd, 2023

Disney’s marketing for Wish has been a bit peculiar to say the least. It’s meant to be the movie that celebrates 100 years of Disney, but besides the trailer release, there’s been barely a pip about it. It could also be a strategy, since I knew nothing about Frozen before impulsively watching it in the theatres, and now it’s one of Disney’s most successful animated movies. Maybe after 100 years in the business, they know what they’re doing.

Wish is set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha (Ariana DeBose) is set become an apprentice to King Magnifico (Chris Pine), a ruler who has the power to grant wishes. While working with him, she discovers that he only grants wishes he thinks would benefit Rosas. This leads Asha to impulsively make a wish so powerful that it is answered by a Star. Together, Asha and Star will take on Magnifico, to save her community.

5. Saltburn | November 22nd, 2023

If you enjoyed The Talented Mr. Ripley, then Saltburn should be right up your alley. In the film, Barry Keoghan plays Oliver, a freshmen at Oxford in 2006. Oliver’s humble origins means he’ll never be able to fit in with most of his schoolmates. A fellow schoolmate Felix (Jacob Elordi) takes pity on him, often bringing him to parties and dinners, and eventually inviting him to stay in his sprawling family estate over the summer.

Besides Keoghan and Elordi, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has a whole host of talented actors onboard, like Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant and Carey Mulligan. Even if Saltburn can’t quite reach its satirical aspirations, it should still prove to be wicked fun.
