New Details About Todd McFarlane’s Spawn Movie

Variety broke the news a few days ago that Todd McFarlane will be partnering with niche horror film studio Blumhouse to bring his Spawn script to life. This will mark his feature debut as a director.

In an interview with Vulture released on Sunday, McFarlane had some pretty interesting details about the film.

Perhaps the most shocking revelation is that Spawn won’t be the main character. Instead, it appears that Sam and Twitch, the homicide detectives that first appeared in the Spawn comics and then later starred in a series of their own, will be the main characters. Speaking of Twitch,  McFarlane thinks Leonardo DiCaprio, because of his emotional range, would be perfect for the role.

Also in a bit of a departure from his own source material, apparently McFarlane thinks Spawn will work best as a mute. Citing Jaws as an influence, he said that the character will have more of an impact that way. This makes me think that Spawn is going to be more of a villain than the anti-hero type we’ve come to associate with him.

All very interesting stuff. Perhaps the major studios that McFarlane shopped his script to will regret rejecting it once they see the final product. Then again, maybe they won’t.
