Netflix just released the official trailer for director Spike Lee’s upcoming film Da 5 Bloods. The film follows Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis) and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.), four veterans who go back to Vietnam in search for buried treasure, as well as the remains of their squad leader (Chadwick Boseman). Da 5 Bloods’ narrative toggles between the past and present, as the four embark on their adventure together, the space forcing them to confront and deal with their traumas.

The trailer is masterfully put together, flashing between vintage footage of the Vietnam war, exclamatory red font, with the Chambers Brothers’ Time Has Come Today serving as a theme song. There is also a rather pointed reference made, with the four dancing in a club that is screening Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse Now is a 1979 war film with roots in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, transposed from the spaces of the Congo to that of the Vietnam War, which explains why it is referenced in this film.

Lee won his first Academy award in 2019 for the adapted screenplay of BlacKkKlansman, which also had nominations for best picture and best director. Netflix is banking on Da 5 Bloods replicating some of that success, and with a trailer like this, they might be right on the money.

Da 5 Bloods will premiere on Netflix June 12, 2020.
