My Hero One’s Justice Is A Damn Good Arena Brawler

Bandai Namco love their 3D arena brawlers based on animes, huh? There’s Naruto, One Piece, Seven Deadly Sins, Jump Force and now My Hero One’s Justice, a game based on the popular My Hero Academia series. If this game is any indication, I should probably get around to watching it, because this game is a whole lot of fun.

At first glance, My Hero One’s Justice looks like the standard 3D anime brawler we’ve all played before, but this game feels tighter and more like a “proper” fighting game. Then again, maybe I thought it was tighter because I managed to cave some random kid’s skull in. Virtually of course, not literally. Still, I probably wouldn’t be able to do that with a Naruto game.

Arena brawlers are often dictated by charging your meter and spamming your specials from long range, but not here. The fighting feels predominantly focused on close range pummelling, which naturally makes fights feel more exciting. Instead of super attacks being abused throughout a fight because you charge them with one button, they’re much rarer occurrences here, as they absolutely should be.

Still, there are one or two long range characters that can provide some problems. Dabi in particular can be tricky to navigate, as his projectile game is unparalleled. Still, he’s extremely weak up close, so any skilled player will be able to neutralise him effectively. He’s powerful, but not overpowered. Probably.

Though time will tell whether or not My Hero One’s Justice will have the depth needed to survive long term, its future is looking quite bright indeed. Now I just need to figure out what the hell the series is actually about before the game releases on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on October 26th 2018.
