The launch roster of Mortal Kombat 1 comes complete with 22 kombatants, 23 if you include the pre-order DLC character Shang Tsung. However, when you first start the game, you’ll notice that one of the roster, Havik, is greyed out. Like the fighting games of old, you’ll need to put a bit of effort in if you wish to unlock, though thankfully the process to do so is very simple, if a little time consuming if you’re just looking to hop online and batter scrubs.

In order to unlock Havik, you simply need to complete the Mortal Kombat 1 Story Mode on any difficulty. Again, it’s a simple enough process, but all told, there are 15 chapters in the Story Mode, and there’s a lot of long cutscenes too. Granted, it’s well worth checking out, as some of the origins and twists to iconic characters are brilliant, while the storytelling is top notch. Still, if you’re a lab gremlin, that might not sound like the most fun to you if you want to unlock Havik from the get-go.

If you would rather unlock Havik quickly, the only real tip we have for you is to skip the cutscenes altogether. Compilation videos on YouTube put the cutscenes for Mortal Kombat 1’s story at around four hours in length, meaning you’ll be saving a lot of time if you hit pause and press skip every time you start seeing that letterboxed aspect ratio. Unfortunately, you’ll still have to complete around 65 fights in order to fully complete the Story Mode, and plus you’ll be missing out on one of the best fighting game stories going. It might sound like hard work, but unlocking Havik at the end definitely makes it worth it.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available now if you buy the special edition, otherwise MK1 will launch on September 19th for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X & S and Nintendo Switch.
