Mortal Kombat 1 is a grand reinvention of the series, and one of the biggest changes NetherRealm Studios have made to the formula is the introduction of Kameo Fighters. This additional roster of characters are chosen separately from your main kombatants, and each Kameo boasts their own moves and assists that can help you out during a fight.

Mortal Kombat 1’s base roster includes 15 Kameo Fighters, but when you first boot up the game, only 10 of those Kameo Fighters are actually available. If you want those additional five Kameo Fighters, you’re going to have to unlock them, but the game doesn’t make it immediately clear how to do so. Fortunately, we’re on hand to help you out. This is how you unlock the five additional Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1.

The process is pretty simple, though it might be a bit time consuming to unlock all of them. Basically, as you earn XP throughout the game, your account level will go up. Every five levels, you’ll unlock a new Kameo Fighter, meaning you’ll need to reach level 25 to unlock all of them. This is the order of Kameo unlocks, so you know which fighter you’ll need to grind for.

Scorpion: Reach Account Level 5
Sub-Zero: Reach Account Level 10
Kung Lao: Reach Account Level 15
Shujinko: Reach Account Level 20
Motaro: Reach Account Level 25

For those who have just started playing Mortal Kombat 1, the easiest way to raise your account level is by playing the game’s single player modes, including the Kampaign mode, Towers and the Invasions mode. In our experience, we unlocked the Scorpion Kameo after just a couple of fights in the Invasions mode, but progress on the other four unlocks isn’t quite so quick.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available now if you buy the special edition, otherwise MK1 will launch on September 19th for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X & S and Nintendo Switch.
