Microsoft Will Consider More Studio Acquisitions In The Future

Apparently it's harder to make a new studio than buy one. Who knew?

After the recent announcement that Microsoft would be acquiring Bethesda, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Microsoft would like to give their wallet a rest, but apparently not. While they have nothing to announce, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke to Cnet to indicate that Microsoft are open to making more purchases should the need arise.

In the interview, Nadella states: “We’ll always look for places where there is that commonality of purpose, mission and culture. We will always look to grow inorganically where it makes sense.” He also goes on to talk about the rationale behind purchasing a studio instead of creating one: “You can’t wake up one day and say, ‘Let me build a game studio’. The idea of having content is so we can reach larger communities.”

Does This Mean Another Announcement Is Imminent?

It’s hard to say at this point. The purchase of Bethesda has made the act of video game analysis a bit of a nightmare. It was kept a close-guarded secret by those at Microsoft and Bethesda and it took everyone off guard, 24 hours before the pre-orders went live for the new consoles. It was a huge coup for the Xbox brand.

As for any new acquisitions, Nadella’s statement walks a thin-line between intent and “keeping his cards close to his chest”. While it doesn’t confirm either way whether there are more deals in the works, it does reiterate that Microsoft have the purse-strings to support the Xbox brand however they see fit.

Would We Like To See More Acquisitions?

Yes and no. On the one hand, as a consumer, any huge additions to Xbox Game Pass add fantastic value to what is already one of the most affordable and brilliant services in gaming. That said, it’s hard not to see Microsoft making all these moves and instantly compare it to Disney’s acquisitions of the likes of 20th Century Fox.

While Xbox are certainly a long way off from a monopoly of sorts, there’s a danger of things heading that way. To Microsoft’s credit at least, Nadella said in the Cnet interview that they wouldn’t want to interfere in Bethesda’s day-to-day operations, keeping them semi-independent: “It is about the culture of those teams. They’re not about becoming us.”
