Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 Will Reportedly Contain MGS 4

Shortly following the announcement of what will come with Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, a Twitter user has noticed that the MGS timeline page on the official MGS website has placeholder buttons in the page’s code for Metal Gear Solid 5, Peace Walker, and most importantly of all, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Nitroid noticed the inactive links in the official timeline page for all things Metal Gear canon, which features Metal Gear Solid 4 as its final chronological entry.

While this could just be excused as a technical error, IGN’s Wesley Yin-Poole says that they have heard that Metal Gear Solid 4 will indeed be coming to Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, which is due out sometime next year. It’s not like IGN to leak/corroborate leaks in this way unless it’s almost a certainty, adding further weight to the rumour.

MGS 4 has really been the game that everyone’s been asking about when it comes to this current Metal Gear Resurrection. Marooned on the PS3 since 2008 due to supposed exclusivity deals and technical issues, the game’s assistant producer Ryan Payton has recently revealed that the game was actually working “beautifully and smoothly” on Xbox 360, but didn’t move ahead due to the 360’s dependence on DVD compared to the PS3’s Blu-ray. A 360 version of Metal Gear Solid 4 would have required multiple discs (probably 20-25 just for the cutscenes), which Konami were unwilling to commit to.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the closing chapter of Solid Snake’s story in Metal Gear canon. While critically praised at the time, it’s gone on to become a slightly polarising entry in the franchise due to its overabundance of cutscenes and random marriages, though it still features some of the IP’s best moments, including an iconic final showdown and unexpected graveyard meeting. It will be interesting to see what kind of reappraisal Kojima’s bonkers bit of decadence gets if it does indeed release with Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, but don’t hold out any hope for any kind of involvement from Kojima himself.
