Memories of Green: San Francisco #17

Date – 19/07/2089
Subject – Dee & Saul

Kept my promise to Dee today and took her and Saul for coffee down on Columbus Avenue by Hyde Street Pier. I tried my best to pick somewhere almost the total opposite of the Hunters Point Inclusion Zone. There are some pretty high end shops just opening up down that way, i’d recommend you guys check it out. I would have picked up a new coffee table if I didn’t have to carry it home on the train with me.

It was crazy how long it took us to get to Columbus, I didn’t think it was possible, but after the shooting in LA the other day, they’ve really stepped security up. I had to tell Dee and Saul that it wasn’t normal to get searched before we got on the train, or to have guards standing outside the restaurant we ate at.

I wish Galen could have seen them. It was their first time out in the city and they looked lost. After living out in the country for so long I guess anyone would be. It was almost as if they’d stumbled into a different world, they were so funny trying to be polite and let everybody onto the train before them. Makes you wonder how polite people everyone must have been back in the day. Dee asked me how long it took me to get used to the pace of the city, I told her it might take a few years. She looked a little concerned for a second, then she said that we’d have to go out together more often in that case. I guess we’ll be spending a lot more time together once the baby is born, i’ll have to get Dee used to the city before then.

Saul told me that the last time he was in San Francisco must have been about forty years ago. He pointed across the bay and told me there used to be a cinema complex near Pier 15 when he was younger. He used to take Dee there before they were married. He said they’d play pool afterwards in one of the bars before they drove home. Pier 15 is all shipyards now, between the cranes and the smokestacks, you couldn’t even picture what it used to look like.

I felt terrible taking Dee and Saul back to the inclusion zone. Dee kept a brave face on and told me to take it easy, but you could tell she was scared stiff of going back in there, back to the shack. I tried to invite them back to the house, but Dee told me the Curfew Officers would go nuts if they found them missing at role call tomorrow morning. Did anyone else realise these inclusion zones had role calls? I’m not sure “Inclusion” is the right word to describe these camps. What are the Administration doing to these poor people?
