Matt Hardy Announces Official Retirement From WWE & Wrestling

Sad news falls upon this bleak Monday morning, the moment we KNEW WOULD COME, has indeed been confirmed. Matt Hardy officially announced his retirement from WWE via his Twitter account, posting the following video in thanks of his legions of fans from all eras.

Since losing the Raw Tag Team Championships to The B Team, The Woken Warrior had seemingly faded away and classified himself as too injured to compete outside of the occasional live event appearance. For a while, speculation suggested that he was to be taking on a bigger role backstage, along with Jason Jordan. For a while that seemed to be the case, with Hardy still being featured on WWE’s Instagram series – The Woken Word of the Week – and very rarely competing in tag matches alongside his compeer Bray Wyatt on live events.

Although, all good things do indeed come to an end. Whether you were a fan of his recent Woken antics, his era of Mattitude or the OG Hardy Boy funsies, it’s hard to deny that Matt has had one hell of a career.

It was fantastic to see Matt have one last big run in the WWE, getting to dip into both his innovative tag team work with Jeff and also flexing the whimsical world of the Woken Universe on mainstream television. It’s always better to go out on a high than let things lose momentum and become stale, and I think Hardy couldn’t have timed this better.

Here’s hoping we’ll get an occasional cameo out of the Woken Warrior every now and then, unless Hardy plans on making a return to the indie scene, which at this point seems somewhat unlikely. Either way, we extend our thanks and well wishes to Matt Hardy.
