According to news from Variety, there will be a fourth Matrix movie in the franchise, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss returning to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. Lana Wachowski, one part of the Wachowski pair, is set to direct. Wachowski also penned the script, along with a writing team comprising of Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. There is no news as yet of Lilly Wachowski’s involvement, or if she will play any part in the sequel.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski, who worked as a stuntmen on the original trilogy, actually spilled the news about the sequel to Yahoo UK. However, he wasn’t sure about the details, saying that he wasn’t sure whether Lana Wachowski would be involved, and now we know she is set to direct, with her sister not currently part of the equation.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich, during his announcement, said that: “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.” 20 years ago, the Wachowski sisters brought The Matrix onto our screens and into our lives, a movie that has inundated itself in our film landscape forever.

If you’re wondering about Morpheus, and if Laurence Fishburne will be back with Reeves and Moss, there has been no confirmation of this yet, though there are some rumours he might be recast.

Filming is set to start in the beginning of 2020.
