Today sees the release of a 10 hour preview of the hugely anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda to EA Access and Origin Access subscribers.

Mass Effect: Andromeda steps away from the events of the previous trilogy with fresh heroes, original adventures and a shiny new galaxy. Humanity has decided to unceremoniously do-one in the face of overwhelming odds and as a ‘Pathfinder’ you are responsible for the first wave of colonists bound for unchartered space. The game promises to focus on exploration and survival, a premise that already has fans salivating at the prospect of forging a new home amongst the stars.

Progress in the campaign will be limited, Bioware have confirmed. Producer Fernando Melo stated that whilst the story would be capped at a specific point, players would be free to continue exploring the planet included in the preview up to the time limit.

The multiplayer aspect of the preview will not be restricted in the same way and players will be able to progress as much as they’d like within the time limit. Melo even said that there is a link between the single and multiplayer features of the game; presumably in an attempt to render the latter not totally meaningless.

For those not familiar with EA/Origin Access, for a fee of £5 a month or £30 a year, you can download a host of EA games to your Xbox One from the ‘vault’ for free including the original Mass Effect trilogy, Titanfall and Mirror’s Edge, as well as discounts on EA games in the Microsoft store. PlayStation users will have to wait as EA Access is not currently available for Sony’s little black box.

From a personal perspective, I’m just glad to have something to do other than watch that trailer over and over again.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is on general sale in Europe March 23rd.
