Middling Reviews Don’t Stop Mass Effect: Andromeda Topping UK Sales Charts

Mass Effect Andromeda

The issues with Mass Effect: Andromeda and the backlash from series fans has been written about to death. There isn’t a lot more to be said other than that the fanbase is divided: some love it, some hate it. It’s one of the most polarising games in recent memory already.

It’s also the lowest-rated game in the series so far with a smattering of 6s and 7s from many critics, including a 7.5 from myself. Andromeda is not a bad game, it’s just good. It could have done with a few months of extra polish, that’s for certain.

Despite a relatively lukewarm reception, it’s still done enough to take the top spot in the UK game sales charts. Here’s the full list from Chart-Track.

1. Mass Effect: Andromeda
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands
3. Lego Worlds
4. Horizon Zero Dawn
5. Grand Theft Auto V
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
7. FIFA 17
8. Rocket League
9. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
10. Forza Horizon 3

55% of the game’s physical sales came from PS4 with Xbox One and PC picking up the rest. A lot of websites have been contentiously suggesting that sales are a failure in comparison to Mass Effect 3, which doesn’t seem fair. These charts only track physical copies sold and with the wider adoption of digital downloads since 2012, it might not be a decent reflection.

Here’s the bottom line from my review:

“Despite all the quibbles and problems I kept bumping into with Mass Effect: Andromeda, I still couldn’t tear myself away from it. Its problems are plentiful, but ultimately not enough to make it a bad game. It comes close to actually being a great game, though it has to settle for just being good. In many ways, Andromeda reminds me of the original Mass Effect: a scrappy, tryhard adventure that found its voice on its next outing. Hopefully Bioware can learn from the mistakes they made here and take the franchise back to the stars where it belongs.”

Mass Effect: Andromeda is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
