BioWare’s Mass Effect: Andromeda has been released to mixed reviews from fans and critics alike. Our very own Nick Monahan deemed the game to be “troubling”, and the game’s had its fair share of criticisms and troubles, even prior to its release.

Despite this, reviews for the game have been middling to good, with most reviewers praising the game’s characters and worlds as immersive and detailed. Facial animations and lackluster storylines are the main complaints. Here’s a selection of five reviews for Mass Effect: Andromeda, to help you decide if the game is right for you:

POLYGON: 7.5/10

I’m conflicted about Mass Effect: Andromeda. There’s a lot of roughness throughout the game, and the technical issues, while not game-breaking, are often incredibly distracting.

EMPIRE: 4/5

More status quo instalment than groundbreaking evolution, Andromeda is a good, sometimes great game that allows existing fans to dive back into one of their favourite universes from a fresh perspective, while getting the series off to a solid start for a new generation of armchair space adventurers.

NERDIST: 3/5

If you’re able to look past its blemishes and performance issues, Andromeda is well worth your time. If not, then now seems like an awfully good time to replay the original trilogy.

FORBES: 8.5/10

Mass Effect: Andromeda is so big it’s almost unwieldy. It tries to balance a new concept, an open-world, with an entirely new story and cast barely connected to the original games. While it manages to create a great new hero and crew, there’s simply too much busywork, and its big set-pieces aren’t quite as memorable as they need to be. Combat is a lot of fun, but the game is so big even that gets tiring in time. The story, though interesting and engaging at times, has far too many loose ends, and it’s often tough to know how or if your decisions really influenced things.

PC GAMER: 80%

This is a series that has always been good at getting under your skin, that has built its reputation on the moments when all of those disparate elements, good and bad, cohere into an adventure that feels like it’s happening to you. Andromeda can still do that. It’s not perfect. It’s not consistent. But for a story about vast journeys and fresh starts, it also feels a little like coming home.
