Marvel’s Spider-Man Is Sony’s Fastest Selling PlayStation Title Ever

Sony have revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man is their fastest selling PlayStation of all-time with it selling 3.3 million copies in just three days since launch. It’s been out for a little while now, so you can expect it to have sold many more than that, perhaps in excess of five million.

This means it far outstrips the earlier PS4 exclusive God of War, which set a fair few records itself. It also means that this is not just the fastest selling first-party PlayStation 4 game, but since the PlayStation brand began. Think of all of the PlayStation-only classics to date: Marvel’s Spider-Man is selling faster than them.

To (rather lazily) crunch the numbers, if we take the amount of copies sold by the game in its first three days and multiply it by the cost of the game in GBP (roughly £45, to be conservative), Marvel’s Spider-Man has — at the very least — generated £148.5 million for Sony and Marvel. In USD with a pricetag of $60, that’s $198 million. Crikey. And that’s just its first few days, sans DLC or more expensive editions.

What can beat Marvel’s Spider-Man? The Last of Us: Part II might be the closest bet, though the age restrictions may hold it back a little. Unless the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone sell by the absolute bucketload, the title may be Spidey’s for at least the rest of this generation.

From our Marvel’s Spider-Man review:

“With all the freedom it gives you to web-sling through New York City and stick goons to walls, Spider-Man for PS4 is the best Spider-Story I’ve had the pleasure to experience, and even on its own is a brilliant game.”
