Marvel’s Midnight Suns: Is There Permadeath?

Considering it’s from the same minds behind the absolutely punishingly hard XCOM 2, it should be no surprise to hear that Marvel’s Midnight Suns also offers a fair challenge, with many different difficulty options to choose from. Firaxis are known for making every action count in their games, but does Marvel’s Midnight Suns also have permadeath like XCOM 2?

The answer is no, Marvel’s Midnight Suns mercifully doesn’t include permadeath, even as an option in any of its difficulties. This is because your heroes are only KO’d in battle, and when all members of your team are KO’d, you can simply restart the encounter without permanently losing anything.

Permadeath really wouldn’t work in Midnight Suns from a purely narrative perspective anyway, as each of the heroes has some role to play in your fight against Lilith as The Hunter. Taking any one of them away would mean that the story would get very messy and maybe impossible to finish. Plus, there’s much more depth to them than the mostly personality-less soldiers in XCOM — you really want to learn more about Blade and put Doctor Strange in increasingly gaudy jumpers. Adding permadeath might add stakes, but it would take away the game’s biggest trump card: its characters.

Plus, Disney probably wouldn’t take too kindly to a character like Captain Marvel being permanently killed off by some weird ghost dog.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X & S.
