Marvel Heroes Shutting Down As Disney End Partnership With Gazillion

Marvel Heroes Omega

Another MMO bites the dust, it seems. Disney have announced that they’re cutting ties with developers Gazillion Entertainment, meaning that their Diablo-esque MMORPG Marvel Heroes will be shutting down soon.

The news was first reported by Kotaku, who spoke to a representative of Marvel who had this to say about the decision:

“We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”

Whilst Marvel Heroes has been out since 2013 on the PC, it is perhaps the console players who are the most short changed by this announcement. The latest version, Omega has only been on consoles since June, so to announce that the game will be discontinued a mere five months after launching will no doubt raise the ire of most gamers. Hopefully, there will be some way to at least compensate players for the money they’ve put into the game, especially when it was asking you to pay 50 dollars/pounds for a couple of characters.

Players were quick to see the writing on the wall with Marvel Heroes though, as certain recent promises simply weren’t delivered by the developers. For instance, there was no Halloween event nor any form of mandatory Thor: Ragnorok tie-in. By comparison, Marvel Heroes held a huge event for Spider-Man: Homecoming when that launched earlier this year.

It’s sad to see an MMO go down the drain like this, but often big corporations don’t end partnerships on a whim. There are two reasonable conclusions to be drawn here: either Marvel Heroes simply wasn’t earning enough money to justify the investment, or Marvel and Disney have another project in the pipeline. Only time will tell.
