Mario Possibly Confirmed For Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

Mario will be appearing in this year’s Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, if the Internet Movie Database is to be believed. Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario since 1996, is also listed as voicing Nintendo’s mascot in the upcoming Disney sequel, and whilst this is by no means an official confirmation, it’s certainly a strong indication that Mario will indeed appear in Wreck-It Ralph 2.

This news is hardly surprising, as director Rich Moore promised back in 2012 that Mario would definitely appear in a sequel to Wreck-It Ralph should it get made. Moore, who won an Oscar for Zootopia, is returning to direct the sequel alongside Phil Johnston, and it looks like he was telling the truth all those years ago. And if there’s one thing we can respect, it’s a man who keeps his promises.

Over 500 million Mario games have been sold to date, so it comes as no surprise that Disney were eager for him to appear in their film. Although Mario did not appear in the first movie, he was mentioned several times, and his arch nemesis, Bowser, was seen attending a group therapy session. Sonic also briefly showed up, but there’s no word if the blue hedgehog will also be in the sequel. The last time we saw Mario on the big screen was in his own live action movie back in 1993, although Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures are currently working on an animated movie starring Mario.

In Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, the titular villain turned hero finds himself thrust into an adventure inside the Internet data space as he searches for a replacement component to fix the game Sugar Rush. John C. Reilly will return to voice Ralph, with Sarah Silverman and Jack McBrayer also reprising their roles as Vanellope von Schweetz and Fix-It Felix, Jr. It’s been confirmed that the film will also feature appearances from C-3PO, R2-D2, Yoda, and several Stormtroopers, in addition to Iron Man and Gamora, making Wreck-It Ralph 2 the first ever official Marvel/Star Wars crossover. With both properties being owned by Disney, it was bound to happen at one point.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 opens in theaters on in the US on November 21. Those of US in the UK will have to wait an extra nine days to see the film before it opens here on November 30.
