Too Many Cooks: Opening Credits of Infinite Insanity

adult swim too many cooks

The fact that the following video premiered to the stoned minds of Adult Swim viewers at 4am is just great. I can’t think of a more perfectly fitted and unwitting audience for this to be first inflicted upon. The laughter and paranoia it no doubt resulted in is exactly what its debut would’ve been deserving of.

The video in question is a short film/epic opening titles sequence that relentlessly parodies 80s sitcom opening credits; four kinds of cheese theme music, ‘caught off guard doing something’ character based introductions to the cast, sight-gags, classic reactionary sitcom expressions that convey such emotions as ‘you guys!’ or ‘what am I like?’ What happens next though is that the titles do not stop and the show does not stop, it keeps going; song lyrics change and more cast/characters are introduced, first through stereotypical ‘type’ side characters (see: bully, cool kid, hot girl, etc.), but then it keeps going, and the music and the show’s genre starts to change into other archetype formats as yet characters are introduced.

Then there’s the murderous storyline unraveling all the while, as well as meta-collapse of televisual reality. Which is of course what all opening credits could do with. It’s a trip. In fact it started to remind me of a recurrent thought-thread I used to get whilst using air duster where I’d become convinced I was stuck in an eternal, infinite loop. Don’t worry though, the show eventually gets started and it is a doozey of a cliffhanger. ‘Too Many Cooks’ was put together by Adult Swim co-creator Casper Kelly, and it is a magnificent display of creative insanity. Plus, even if it doesn’t actually last forever, the theme tune will stay with you that long.
