Lionsgate Wins Film Rights to Judy Blume’s ‘Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret’

Judy Blume's seminal novel has finally found a home in Lionsgate.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate won the film rights to Judy Blume’s book ‘Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret’. Lionsgate has committed a 30 million USD budget to the film, with Kelly Fremon Craig (she previously directed The Edge of Seventeen) coming on to direct her scripted adaptation and James L. Brooks producing.

Blume herself approves of these choices, who for years (50 to be exact) has turned down the opportunity for her book to be adapted. Blume conveyed that she “knew [that] when [she] met Kelly and Jim [she] was incredibly lucky to have them heading up Team Margaret.” She also feels that her book has found the right home with Lionsgate, especially since the studio had been eager about the project from the start.

This enthusiasm was especially seen in several key Lionsgate senior executives, who pitched the project to Blume, Fremon Craig and Brooks. They even transformed their conference room into an 11-year-old girl’s bedroom for their formal meeting with the filmmakers. These executives spoke about how the book got them through the difficult years of puberty, and the transformative experience the book offered.

Having read the book myself all those years ago, it certainly resonated with me, since it charts a young girl’s coming of age experience with such authenticity and truth. There isn’t much information yet on when the movie might be hitting the big screens, so in the meantime, the book could do with a revisit, so you are better prepared when the movie is released.
