Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton Will Make Disney Plus Debut in July

In a shocking twist of events, Hamilton will be premiering on the digital screen instead of the cinema.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of "Hamilton" perform at the Tony Awards in New York on June 12, 2016.

According to Variety, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton will be making its debut on Disney Plus on July 3, 2020, which is about a year ahead of when it was supposed to make its theatrical debut. The rap musical based on Alexander Hamilton’s life was initially supposed to be released in theatres October 15, 2021, but given the coronavirus situation, many movie studios and theatre companies are opting to release their films/musicals/plays digitally. Seeing as how Hamilton’s release coincides with America’s Independence Day, this move by Disney is an effort to bring some light and positivity to the 4th of July weekend.

In a statement, Miranda said: “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney Plus for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4 weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

Disney paid a handsome sum of 75 million USD for the rights to distribute the musical, and while a theatrical release won’t be happening any time soon, Disney still has plans to bring it to the big screen. Given how difficult it is to get the opportunity to see Hamilton in the flesh, the news of this digital release will only bring more subscribers to Disney Plus, so it’s good news all around.
