On the surface, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the combat in Like A Dragon: Ishin is pretty much the same as in other Yakuza/Like A Dragon titles, only now everyone is wielding a sword or a gun. You’d be half right in that assessment, but there’s a couple of tricks up Ishin’s sleeve to make things more interesting, the main one being Trooper Cards, which includes a couple of celebrity appearances. However, if you’re looking for a more vanilla combat experience, this is what you need to do.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to turn off Trooper Cards in Like A Dragon: Ishin.
What Are Trooper Cards?
Trooper Cards are unlocked in Chapter 5, when main character Sakamoto Ryoma becomes the Shinsengumi’s Third Division Captain, as part of his ongoing quest to find his father’s killer. After becoming the captain, you’ll be able to recruit troopers and assign them to one of eight squads, four of which will be tied to Ryoma’s fighting styles, while the other four sit in reserves. By doing this, you can then use the trooper card’s abilities in battle, to help give you an edge in a tough fight.
Can You Turn Trooper Cards Off?
Unfortunately, there’s no way to turn Trooper Cards off, but you can unequip any cards you may have, which is essentially the same thing. However, each card you have equipped has a set health amount, and a percentage of that health is conveyed back to Ryoma. Even if you don’t plan on using the Trooper abilities in battle, it’s worth having the cards equipped as you’ll have more survivability in combat.
While it might be disappointing for some to learn that the Trooper Cards can’t be turned off, it’s worth keeping in mind that the abilities you receive from Trooper aren’t necessary to complete the game. It’s completely possible to beat the game with just Ryoma’s basic abilities, but the addition of Trooper Card abilities adds some nice flavor to the game’s combat.
Like A Dragon: Ishin is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X & S.
