Life is Strange 2 Kickstarter Closed Down

Life is Strange 2

Life is Strange was a big hit upon release which might have easily become lost in the mix as it was a smaller game episodic in nature. But it hit a nerve with both critics and gamers, the storytelling and player choices made it quite unique and enthralling. As with most episodic games, a number of episodes were planned and released, the story was finished and that was the end.

Then came news of a Kickstarter campaign to release a sequel. Normally this would be good news, as the game certainly lends itself to a second chapter. However, it was quickly discovered that this Kickstarter was to raise funds to buy the rights to the game from the publishers, hoping to acquire $20,000. Within hours it was cancelled and removed from Kickstarter’s website.

And rightly so. This wasn’t official nor did it really have anything to do with the game, more the online ramblings of an overzealous fan. Kickstarter campaigns, and fan made versions of games and sequels, are quite common these days. Sometimes they are worthy causes, but the legalities are complicated and designed to protect creators and companies, many of these fan made games want to resurrect lost titles such as Star Wars Battlefront 3. I’d support that for sure as it was a game heavily in development and cancelled for reasons unknown.

In this case, there will be no Life is Strange 2. Well, maybe there will be one day but that’s down to Dontrod Entertainment and Square Enix.

Fan games have their place as they becoming increasingly well-made and technologically advanced but the simple fact is; people can’t just ask for money to make games that belong to someone else, however noble their intentions might be.
