Latest Agony Trailer Reveals New Information On Agony Mode

Agony

As its release date inches ever closer, developers Madmind Studios have released yet another vague, disgusting, and horrifying look into their upcoming game, Agony. Previously we saw proof that there would, in fact, be a good focus on a worthwhile story mode, and with this most recent trailer we can rest assured that Agony Mode will be more than your generic Steam roguelike.

With everything Agony does to associate itself with other roguelikes, the trailer is determined to offer an opposing rarely tried feature in the genre. Where there’s procedurally generated levels of a bone encrusted Hell, there’s a “Red Chamber” waiting to be uncovered, allowing you to become a big bad Succubus or further the challenge. Where there’s a steady RNG-based upgrade system, there’s puzzles and quest items littered around, forcing you to not just survive, but also deduce your way out of Hell. On top of all this, Madmind added a random challenge system. If you plan on surviving Agony Mode, you’ll need to be on your toes.

Seeing more games take this “side-mode” approach to roguelike elements in their games (like Niflheim in the new God of War), is actually a really good direction for the genre, allowing for more variation and risk taking. For many gamers, including myself, roguelike games wear out their welcome pretty easily in favor of a more guided and driven experience, which as we all know by Jimmy’s review, God of War delivers in spades, on top of a more than competent bonus roguelike area for those interested. More bang for your buck is always a good thing in this expensive market, and additional games following this technique of giving players extra content in one package is exceedingly welcome.

Agony launches on May 29th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
