In an interview with New Hollywood podcast, Kumail Nanjiani revealed the context for raw footage of a particular scene from The Eternals set, which had Nanjiani decked out in colourful garb, dancing in what appeared to be a Bollywood inspired scene. Nanjiani explained that The Eternals takes place in a modern day setting, with the group of immortal aliens basically needing to keep a low profile here on earth so as to keep their identities a secret. His character apparently didn’t get the memo, because he becomes a big Bollywood star.
Nanjiani spoke about how glad he was that the film had a scene that portrayed such a strong sense of representation, since he had to film it with about 50 other South Asian actors. He also mentioned the intense physical training he had to go through to prepare for the scene, which involved a few months of Bollywood dance classes, because Bollywood dancing is strenuous stuff.
The actor goes on to share more about director ChloĆ© Zhao’s directorial style, commenting on her preference for practical effects, dislike of green screen, and love of magic hour. Sounds like Zhao is changing up the usual visual spectacle that we have come to expect from Marvel, and we are definitely loving it.
The Eternals arrives in cinemas November 6, 2020.
