Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae’s The Lovebirds Gets Netflix Release Date

Get ready to laugh the night away with this Netflix rom-com.

Netflix just re-released the official trailer for The Lovebirds, along with a release date of May 22, 2020. The Lovebirds was originally meant to premiere at SXSW, but due to the rising concerns of covid-19 the film was pulled from the festival, just slightly before the festival shutting down for the year. Paramount managed to secure a deal with Netflix, which was announced a month ago, and now we have a release date.

Kumail Nanjiani tweeted a video announcement featuring both Issa Rae and himself (socially distanced of course), to let the public know about the release date. In The Lovebirds, Nanjiani and Rae play a couple who become unintentionally entangled in a murder mystery, which does sound similar to Tina Fey and Steve Carell’s Date Night. Nanjiani and Rae’s characters have to figure out how to clear their names, as well as survive the night.

The Lovebirds is directed by Michael Showalter, who also helmed The Big Sick, a rom-com with Nanjiani as the lead. The Big Sick is based on Nanjiani’s real life love story with wife Emily, and it is an absolutely funny and poignant film, which you should watch if you haven’t already. Fingers crossed that the Showalter-Nanjiani combo translates to a positive outcome for The Lovebirds as well, though I have to say that the trailer alone made me laugh a bunch of times, so I have high hopes for the film.
