Kingdoms of Amalur Is Back With A Brilliant Name

We re-reckon this is going to be sweet.

It looks like cult RPG favourite Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is back with a remaster that went to the Red Faction school of names.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is the latest in a growing line of THQ Nordic re-releases that plays it silly with an updated name, following Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered and Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition, but this might be the strongest one yet.

But that’s not really the story here, the fact that Kingdoms of Amalur, one of the most controversial games ever released, is back with a surprise remaster, due for release on August 11th this year.

Here’s the description from its Microsoft Store listing:

“The hit RPG returns! From the minds of the bestselling author R.A. Salvatore, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead designer Ken Rolston, comes Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. Remastered with stunning visuals and refined gameplay Re-Reckoning delivers intense, customizable RPG combat inside a sprawling game world.”

The remaster looks like it will be handled by KAIKO, the guys THQ Nordic usually lean on for their remasters. They’ve helped to port both of the Darksiders games, along with Red Faction and Legend of Kay.

There’s been no official word from THQ Nordic on this just yet.

This re-release is certainly interesting, what with the game’s storied development that led to court case with the state of Rhode Island. 38 Studios, the game’s original developers, agreed to pay a $2.5m settlement after they could not pay back a $75m loan from the state.

On top of that, Kingdoms of Amalur also had an Online Pass, despite being a single player game, that wasn’t exactly well-received.

38 Studios went bankrupt not long after the game’s release with THQ Nordic then stepping in to buy the rights in 2018.

Any controversy hasn’t stopped Kingdoms of Amalur from going on to become something of a cult favourite. While the overall reception to the game was positive but not gushing, its fans see it as a decent alternative to Skyrim: the hot property at the time.

We will see if the game can make the most of its second time in the limelight when it launches this August.
