Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s New Patch For PS4 Is Almost As Big As The First

Kingdom Come Brian Blessed

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a deeply engrossing, meticulously detailed, and mechanically uncompromising open-world RPG. No matter how good it is, though, it will never reach its full potential until it’s patched to the state it deserves to be in – it’s almost the dictionary definition of a rough diamond.

Before its launch, reports circulated from those who received the game early that there would be a massive patch for day one users, which amounted to in excess of 20GB. The reasons behind this were complicated as the team had to essentially rewrite gigantic archives of up to 2GB in data and then have them be redownloaded. It’s strange process, for sure.

After booting up my PS4 to wade through more of Bohemia in order to review the thing sometime before the end of days (it’s an incredibly dense game that you really shouldn’t just rush through), I was greeted with another download. Curiously enough, Daniel Vávra, the game’s creative director, mentioned yesterday that a patch would not arrive for the next two weeks, so this is a bit of surprise.

Kingdom Come Deliverance patch

That’s a lot of data for one big game and two very large patches for a game’s launch week. After being perplexed by this new patch’s sudden appearance, I found Polygon had reported about it already. Weirder still, their patch was only 15.79 GB compared to my 18.66.

Vávra took to Twitter to mention the patch and also that Xbox One users can expect something very similar soon.

I’m all for developers updating a game and patching what needs to be patched, but the huge downloads each time are a little overkill. Still, the game at its core is good enough to get past that, as my first impressions allude to:

“Perhaps my criticisms of Kingdom Come: Deliverance are so harsh because I toiled through such a concentrated section of frustration, but it was hard to ignore its faults even before they all so blindingly came into focus. Despite the flaws, there’s clearly been a lot of love poured into the game and I’ve barely touched upon how deep and rewarding so many other aspects of it are. It’s still too early for me to make a judgement call on the game, but it must be a good sign that I can look past the many issues I have with it and continue to enjoy the rough diamond at its core. Look for my review later in the week. For now, I will be getting drunk with priests and hoping for patches.”
