Those holding out hope for an adaptation of Kick-Ass 3 and follow-up to Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass and Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2 will unfortunately have to let go of that dream, as recently Vaughn has confirmed in an interview with Empire that he plans to reboot the franchise regaining helm as director, working alongside his production company Marv Studios.
What makes this story more interesting is that it’s also been heavily implied that the reboot won’t focus on Dave Lizewski, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the films, and instead will be an adaptation of the new Kick-Ass incarnation Patience Lee. Vaughn states “We’re going to reboot Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl… Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues.”
For those out of the loop, Millar rebooted Kick-Ass in February 2018 after concluding the original series in 2014 with an aim of treating Kick-Ass as a legacy character. Patience Lee, an African-American single mother, is the newest character to hold this mantle and will offer a different perspective to that which Dave Lizewski provided.
Previously there were plans for Vaughn to expand the franchise and direct Kick-Ass 3, however, with the sequel’s rocky reception and Chloë Grace Moretz’s desire to leave the role of Hit-Girl, a release for Kick-Ass 3 became unclear for a number of years with 2015 being the last comment on it being up in the air.
Vaughn has also been in discussions to create a solo Hit-Girl film which could potentially focus on an older Mindy Macready, or follow her younger years training with her father, Big Daddy.
