New Japan’s KENTA made a shocking appearance in the main event of AEW Beach Break, firing back at the man he will soon be challenging for the IWGP United States Championship, Jon Moxley. Moxley broke headlines last week by making his return to NJPW, setting up the clash with his fellow former WWE colleague at New Beginnings in February.

By having KENTA retaliate on Mox’s home turf, this is not only a huge move towards making this match one of the most exciting in wrestling today, but also another step towards the long anticipated partnership between AEW and NJPW.

Is KENTA under AEW contract?

After a huge GTS to the former AEW champion, this could be the start of a very successful run for KENTA in AEW, whether that be as a contracted competitor that’s also allowed to appear overseas or as special one-off appearances here and there.

At the moment, there is no word as to whether KENTA has been signed or not. But what this does demonstrate is that Tony Khan is more than willing to allow talent from other promotions to jump ship temporarily to create a buzz for both themselves and the company and tick off some dream matches, in the same vein as Impact’s Tag champions, The Good Brothers. This could mean huge things for both AEW and the wrestling industry as a whole.

What could this mean for AEW?

This could very well be the start of something big, with so many NJPW talents with potential of crossing over to AEW and producing some of the most sought after matches by fans worldwide. Just thinking of the current IWGP Champion, Kota Ibushi, making a brief transition to AEW to ignite a feud with former best friend, Kenny Omega, or Kazuchika Okada bringing the Rainmaker to America for another dominant run, it could be absolutely massive.

Wherever this goes, seeing KENTA at Beach Break was a huge mark-out moment for fans of AEW and NJPW. Fingers crossed this isn’t just a brief cameo from the Bullet Club recruit and the match between he and Moxley is as hard-hitting as we think it’ll be.
