Join The Cause In Partisans 1941

Partisans 1941

Partisans 1941 came close to being my favourite game of EGX Rezzed 2019. Set during World War 2, you take control of a group of rebels who are tasked with missions to disrupt the Nazi war machine. Partisans takes its influence from 90s World War tactical games, and one in particular seems to be the focus for the games’ inspiration.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines was a 1998 PC hit which is fondly remembered by many. Partisans looks very, very similar to Commandos, but this isn’t a rip off — feels very much like a homage to that classic. We’ve not seen a Commandos since 2006, so we’re well overdue for a game like this.

However, Partisans isn’t merely a modern copy and paste of an old game; it’s going that extra mile to craft its own identity. Despite the isometric look reminiscent of Commandos, the camera here is actually free to rotate and zoom in, allowing you to see from different angles, which really helps you to plan your method of attack. Each mission tasks you with various objectives, the one I played required me to take down an enemy tank, and it allows you to tool up your partisans exactly how you see fit.

Partisans is a slow burner, one that rewards observation and careful planning. During my playthrough, I observed the patrol patterns of the guard, and stealthily moved my soldiers into position. Hiding in the bushes, my man nips out, takes out the Nazi and carries them back to the bushes to his hide the body. It’s great when a plan comes together.

Unfortunately, this one didn’t, and further into the mission I found myself caught out, and was sadly outgunned in a firefight. Despite my untimely demise, I actually had a lot of fun with Partisans, it’s a game that needs much more time dedicated to it than we could spare during Rezzed, so I will keep an eye on its development.

Partisans is a game all about stealth, tactics and planning ahead, and it’ll certainly appeal to those Commandos fans. I managed a quick chat with the developers who also discussed the addition of base building in the full game, which should add an extra and interesting element to the formula, and one which I am very much looking forward to exploring.

Partisans 1941 is currently due for a 2019 release on PC.
