In a conversation with Breitbart News, Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, told Breitbart News that he had received the third draft of a sequel to the biblical film from Mel Gibson, the films’ producer. He also said that he thinks it’s going “to be the biggest film in world’s history”.

What Will It Be About?

The title currently, according to Caviezel, is The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection. It’s safe to assume that the film will explore the events post crucifixion, which involves his resurrection and Jesus visiting some of his followers. The rumours go as far back as 2016, when there was renewed interest again after the production of Hacksaw Ridge, which Gibson directed.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer Randall Wallace, who was nominated for an Academy Award for scripting Gibson’s 1995 best picture Oscar winner Braveheart, and a co-writer on Hacksaw Ridge, reluctantly confirmed this back in 2016.

A representative for Gibson declined to comment on the filmmaker-actor’s involvement in a Passion sequel at the time, but seeing that Caviezel received a third draft of the script from Gibson, he is certainly involved on a scriptwriting level.

All that Controversy

Speaking candidly, Caviezel discussed the controversy of the film, given its mixed critical response as well as “the hostility towards biblical films in Hollywood”.

Caviezel responded: “I had no choice. I had to defend it. I had to fight to survive. The film exploded. It was off the charts. You’d think, ‘Oh, you’re going to work a lot.’ No, I didn’t. I was no longer on the studio list. That was gone.”

The actor will reprise his role as Jesus Christ in the sequel, though it may be some time before the film makes its way to the big screen.
