Jak and Daxter Series Coming to PS4 in 2017

Naughty Dog is best known in recent years for their Uncharted and The Last of Us franchises, third person action games taking place in settings grounded in the familiar surroundings of our world.

In the PS2 days, however, they made their mark primarily with the Jak and Daxter franchise. Much like their competitors over at Insomniac with Ratchet and Clank, the series followed a duo, in this case a boy (and later a rather grim and angry young man) named Jak and his weasel-like ottsel pal Daxter. Together they explore strange lands and in later games a hostile wasteland in search of ancient secrets, fighting against all manner of foe from hostile fauna to armed soldiers and “Metal Heads,” an ancient race of biomechanical aliens.

Today it was announced that all four of the PS2 entries in the series would be receiving HD-rereleases on the Playstation 4. From the official listing on Playstation.com:

Set on an unnamed planet, these games follow the two protagonists, Jak and Daxter, as they try to unlock the secrets of their world and discover mysteries left behind by the Precursors. Experience all four classics on PS4 with 1080p up-rendering, Trophies, and more.

Further information on the Playstation blog reveals that the inclusion of the fourth game, Jak X: Combat Racing, will unfortunately not feature online play, but will allow for local splitscreen. They also elaborate a bit on the “and more” bit from the official site:

Experience these Naughty Dog PS2 classics with 1080p up-rendering and Trophy support. Additional enhanced features include Shareplay, Remote Play, and Activity Feeds (an active PlayStation Plus membership is required to use certain online features).

There’s no official release date beyond “2017” yet, but at least we know we’ll be getting four new nostalgia trips before the year is out. We’ll have updates as more information is available.
