INTERVIEW: Áine Cahill

It’s always interesting to observe musicians as they make the motion from ‘one to watch’ to ‘one that everyone is watching’. Irish singer/songwriter Áine Cahill has been going from strength to strength since first emerging on the scene in 2014. After touring in Ireland in 2015 and early 2016, she took to the Bread and Roses stage at Glastonbury and all of a sudden her name was everywhere.

Coming into 2017, and with Electric Picnic, 3Arena and Eurosonic now also under her belt, she’s just come out with a new single – ‘Plastic’. In June, she’ll be making her first London festival appearance at Field Day. She kindly agreed to have a quick chat with us.

Things moved pretty fast for you in 2016, and don’t seem to have slowed down any this year, what are you mainly working on at the moment?
Hmm, right now I am in the middle of recording some tracks in the studio, also we’re working on planning out all the gigs and stuff for the next few months! Plastic’s music video is coming out too, That was shot a few weeks ago, can’t wait for everyone to see it!

You started out writing purely instrumental music as a teenager, do you feel like you’ve developed a process as a songwriter now or is it different every time?
I actually didn’t start off with pure instrumentals I’ve never written like that, I just started writing lyrics with melody and chords from word go. For a while I had a process but now I just write whenever I have something to say, everything comes at once!

The new single, ‘Plastic’, is very biting and direct in its lyrics, did anything in particular inspire it?
I wouldn’t say a particular thing happened. I just remember feeling really stupid, and I realised certain things about some people in my life. For me, the song is empowering, it’s a message. ‘I know what you’re doing and I’m not letting it happen anymore.’

You’ve said that you wanted to explore the dark side of fame with previous tracks, is that something you’re still exploring?
Yeah I think so, Black Dahlia is one of the songs you’re talking about I presume. I just find fame to be very interesting, the good and bad aspects of it. I wrote 27 Club all about the dark side of fame too!

Which shows/dates coming up are you most excited about?
Buzzing for Field Day I have to say! Victory Park? – Crazy! Also I’m doing The Lexington, London on March 15th and a mini tour around Ireland too, can’t wait for that either!

What has been the biggest defining moment of your career so far?
I think performing for the BBC at Glastonbury or performing in front of 15,000 people in the 3Arena in Dublin are two of my favourite moments from the past year! But if I have to choose one, I’ll say Glastonbury! :) x

If you could collaborate with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose?
I think Lana Del Rey would be a dream come through! Lana, Lady Gaga and Marina & The Diamonds are 3 of my biggest inspirations! So any of them would be whopper! I’d die! Haha

Thanks for chatting with us!
Thanks so much for the questions, see you at Field Day! X
