Why I’m Glad Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps is Delayed

Resident Evil Umbrella Corps

Capcom announced last week that the latest edition to the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps, has been delayed until June.

Capcom’s take on the third-person shooter genre, akin to a Tom Clancy game in tactical cover style, is scheduled to release on the 21st June; pushed from the original 4th May release date. The game plays out with competitive, small team, multiplayer modes, where not only are you pitted against an enemy team of other players, but zombies and other nasty entities the Umbrella Corporation has cooked up in their labs.

This makes the gameplay interesting, do you use the environment to your advantage by bringing zombies into the fray, or destroy everybody/corpse on the map with heavy firepower? The maps themselves look creative with settings seen in previous Resident Evil games, so I’m more than happy to glimpse other sides of this universe.

A big part of multiplayer games is the customisation and Umbrella Corps certainly matches its competitors, with full colour and graphic alterations for every part of your soldiers’ gear and weapons, so be prepared for my all pink operative running round the map. Weapons wise, this game seems again to be on form, the usual assortment of assault rifles and SMG’s are featured along with brutal melee weapons, one of which is called the Hoghammer that looks like a medieval beheading implement.

This all seems like a welcome distraction to keep any shooter gamer busy until the new Call of Duty and Battlefield release, the first of which is apparently far in the future and the second set in World War 1, both a change up from the previous iterations. They would have had games like The Division; a game with a loot system that has me hooked, which is getting new DLC in the next few months and Battleborn; a not too serious FPS from the Borderlands devs Gearbox which is heavily hyped, set to release 3rd May, to compete against, but with this delay they have a clear window of opportunity.

Plus, after the series’ last attempt at a third-person shooter that followed Umbrella agents, Operation Racoon City, which was a scar on a somewhat untarnished franchise, I’m glad they’re making sure that this game can come out polished and ready to make its mark on this year of great games. Saying this though, Capcom are currently re-releasing their old games, but not in the order I would have liked. Starting with RE6 which came to PS4 and Xbox One 29th March, RE5 then comes out in the summer and RE4 (by far the best of these 3) is out near the end of the year (no specific dates given yet).

This all makes me seem like I don’t enjoy the more action-orientated entries in the series, which isn’t entirely true. I applaud Capcom for taking the franchise to new settings and trying new gameplay, but I prefer it in games like Umbrella Corps, when the action elements don’t interfere with a story. By having these spinoffs, Capcom can continue to have an outlet for their new love of straight up shooting, but hopefully keep the main numbered titles within the realm of survival horror for which they have been sorely missing.

If you’re planning to get Umbrella Corps you’ll have to wait a bit longer, but when it comes out watch out for me, I’ll be the one all in pink carrying the Hoghammer.
