A war is no war until the brother kills his brother.

Underground is a Yugoslavian film that makes no sense in parts, is hysterical in others and just confusing in others. However, all these elements merge to create a seriously beautiful film. A word of warning, however, the film only has subtitles in English and as far as my research has led me to believe there is no English language version around. That, however, shouldn’t stop you watching this charming film.

The story is somewhat lacking in parts, and just ridiculous in others. The story starts with Marko; our protagonist drunkenly celebrating his brother’s acceptance into the Yugoslavian socialist party. The very next day the aforementioned brother, Peter, is feeding the animals in their zoo as they get bombed by the German army….fade to bad sex scene.

Kusturica’s film is a randy peepshow, a thorny docu-tangle of real-life horror and magical realist wish fulfillments. It explains how a country destroyed itself from the inside, and it exists to show us how not to repeat these mistakes.

Slate Magazine

The whole family is rather complacent with the events that are unfolding, leaving to form an underground world only once Marko has had his shoes stolen by a rogue elephant. (Yes, you read that right.)

The family somehow find themselves entangled within the black market whilst the WHOLE OF THEIR TOWN are living underground with them. The family become leaders in said black market and trick their town into believing the war is still happening after it ends in order to carry on profiting.

The film is ridiculous. So ridiculous and nonsensical that the whole way through it, I had this stupid smirk on my face. I totally understand why this is on the IMDb’s top 250 films, but I also understand why it’s so low down on said list.

It’s silly, it’s anti-war, it’s great. Get it watched.
