Here’s an Early Look at the H.R. Giger Documentary

You can imagine that in thousands of years time, when our society has crumbled in the wake of famine and war (or Mothra), archaeologists might dig up the remains of H.R. Giger’s house and immediately assume that they’ve found evidence of some bizarre, death-obsessed, secular Swiss society. The late, great designer of everyone’s favorite Xenomorph has left quite a legacy behind him. A terrifying, terrifying legacy. Now a new documentary chronicling his life and particularly his last years is set to be released, complete with the last footage anyone ever took of him.

In Dark Star, film-maker Belinda Sallin will give us a unique insight into the mind and life of the reclusive artist, who was notoriously difficult to pin down in later life. Famously, Giger’s dark, macabre work was heavily inspired by the vivid night-terrors he suffered from for most of his life, terrors that very much shaped his world view and his mind’s eye. Without it, we would have been denied one of the most iconic movie creatures ever to slither across the silver screen, to say nothing of his work on other films, his sculptures, his paintings and his architectural work. The film is currently screening across his home nation of Switzerland and no wider release is confirmed, but I imagine some international release will be forthcoming, given how far his fanbase stretches.
