Hayao Miyazaki’s Next Film Premieres In March

Studio Ghibli maestro Hayao Miyazaki may have announced his retirement a while back, but he clearly couldn’t stay out of work for long, because his next film is set to premiere in just two months.

Boro the Caterpillar (which is known as Kemushi no Boro in its native Japanese) will screen at the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo on March 21. The short was directed by Miyazaki, and apparently runs for just under fifteen minutes. Thanks to Crunchyroll for translating the information on the Ghibli Museum’s website.

Tickets for the screening of Boro the Caterpillar will go on sale on February 10, and given the immense popularity of Studio Ghibli in Japan, they’ll probably sell out pretty damn quickly. The Oscar-winning Miyazaki has been working on the short since 2015, and the plot synopsis provided by Crunchyroll sounds vague to say the least:

Just before dawn, Boro the Caterpillar hatched from an egg among patches of scrub grass. Looking around for the first time, he noticed the brilliance of the morning sun and a deliciousness in the air. Boro lowered himself down to the ground from the borogiku (groundsel), and stepped out into the world of caterpillars and caterpillars’ enemies.

There’s no word yet on when Boro the Caterpillar will receive a general release after its premiere, although you can enjoy a sneak preview of the beautiful-looking short in the video below. Meanwhile, Miyazaki is about to start work on Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiruka (How Do You Live?), an adaptation of the 1937 book by Genzaburo Yoshino, which will presumably be his last film.
