Being transported to a fantasy world sounds lovely until you discover that killing a single goblin requires teamwork, considerable effort and a lie down afterwards. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, also known as Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions, follows Haruhiro and a group of strangers struggling to survive without memories of their previous lives.
The anime adapts Ao Jyumonji’s light novels, illustrated by Eiri Shirai. Its vulnerable characters and watercolour scenery made a memorable combination, even when the beautiful countryside was somewhere you’d very much rather leave.

When Is Grimgar: Season 2 Coming Out?
Grimgar: Season 2 has no verified release date or production announcement. And it’s been a long time since there was any news at all.
The first and most recent television season ended on 28 March 2016, following twelve episodes. There is also a bonus OVA, but it does not constitute a second season.
That means more than ten years have passed since the television finale. The novels offer further material, but having something to adapt and having an anime in production are separate matters.
There’s no verified cancellation announcement either, but this happens all the time with anime. For now, you pretty much just need to hope for a miracle.
What Could Grimgar: Season 2 Be About?
There is no official Season 2 synopsis, but it could follow Haruhiro’s development as a leader and the party’s attempts to take on more demanding work as volunteer soldiers.
The first season made small improvements feel significant. Learning to trust someone, recovering from a mistake or surviving a fight could matter more than acquiring an impressive new attack. Further episodes would have room to test that fragile confidence against unfamiliar enemies and greater responsibility.
There are also the unanswered questions about how the group arrived in Grimgar. Discovering the truth would be welcome, though Haruhiro would probably settle for everyone getting through the week in one piece.

In the UK, Grimgar is currently listed on the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel, with digital purchases available through Amazon Video. The channel requires a separate subscription beyond standard Prime membership. In the US, JustWatch currently lists no streaming options.
No streaming platform has been confirmed for Season 2.
Can You Read The Books While You Wait?
Yes. The light novels are published in English digitally by J-Novel Club and in print by Seven Seas. They continue substantially beyond the anime’s opening adventures.
There is also a shorter manga adaptation, but the novels are the main source material to follow for the wider story.
Starting with Volume 1 gives you more of Haruhiro’s perspective and the group’s gradual development. You’ll lose the anime’s lovely backgrounds, but you’ll finally get to move beyond its first season.
