Grand Theft Auto: Where Next for the Series?

GTA V

Now that GTA V is out on PC and the master race of gamers are satisfied with this newest and shiniest of releases from Rockstar, I for one am wondering where will the franchise go from here.

The story, the graphics (sorry 360/PS3 fans but I’m talking about the ‘next gen’ consoles here), the overall gaming world that is Los Santos and the fact that giving us three main characters introduced us to a whole new way to channel the main story meant that even after the game was completed, there was just so much more to see and do.

I for one would like to see a few different things come into the next GTA installment:

– A female protagonist. Yes, I’m going there. Whilst I am happy to see Trevor, Michael and Franklin cause all sorts of mayhem but I feel that having a female protagonist would add a different and I think welcome change to the franchise. I still think that we should keep the three main character wheel, as it adds a bit of variety to the gaming world.

– A change of scenery? I probably won’t win many fans by asking whether GTA will return to the sunny shores of old Blighty. Rather than just focusing it on London and all that the capital encompasses, they should instead spread the action out to various cities across the country and introduce us to different characters. Sure, it could be fun but then again people all over the world will probably complain about the rain when they see the UK once Rockstar have finished with it.

– This one is much more of a personal choice and more of a pipe dream, but destructible environments? We all know it makes a difference in Battlefield when you can just blow a hole in the wall rather than go through the door but to have it in GTA would be something else. It would make the mayhem you create that much more entertaining. Whether my fragile dream will be realised is another thing entirely.

One thing I want to make clear is that GTA certainly ain’t broke so it shouldn’t be fixed. GTA is fantastic, it brings us into a world which is increasingly becoming more and more real and frankly it can only get better. But then again those are famous last words….
