GoldenEye N64 Documentary in the Works

This has been said many times over the past 20 years, but GoldenEye is one of the best video games ever made. Period.

The 1997 adaptation of the 1995 Bond film was released to fantastic reviews on the N64 back in the day and went on to sell over over eight million copies worldwide, generating over $250 million in revenue. Developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, Goldeneye was, through and through, a masterpiece.

The legacy of GoldenEye will live on, as an Indiegogo campaign has been launched for GoldenEra, a feature-length documentary which will explore the story behind the game. Drew Roller will be directing the film, which will take viewers behind the scenes of how Goldeneye came to be. They’re looking to raise $85,000 on Indiegogo to get the project off the ground, so this is a cause that should unite the millions of Bond fans across the globe.

In addition to interviewing developers who worked on the game, hitting their $150,000 stretch goal will also allow to team to include interviews with heavyweights of the gaming industry including Gabe Newell, Reggie Fils-aime, Ken Levine, Jeff Gerstmann, Randy Pitchford, and the Steven Spielberg of the gaming medium himself, Shigeru Miyamoto.

By the way, you might want to get hold of a copy of GoldenEye on the NG4 while you still can, as the game will probably never be re-released in its original form due to licensing issues. We did get a somewhat enjoyable remake published by EA on the Wii in 2010, although it changed so much of the core mechanics that it just couldn’t hold up to the original. We also got the horrendous Reloaded version in 2011, but the less said about that the better.

With the exception of a few standout titles like Everything or Nothing and Blood Stone, most Bond games released in Goldeneye have fallen into the category of ‘meh’. Five minutes with Activision’s abysmal 007 Legends is enough to have anyone blowing the dust of their GoldenEye N64 cartridges.
