Golden Globe 2018 Nominations Announced: Vice Leads with Six Nominations

Vice movie

The Hollywood Foreign Press has sounded off their nominees this morning, and they went all in for Adam McKay’s Vice. The Dickey Cheney biopic garnered nominations for Motion Picture: Comedy, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Screenplay. This is the strongest showing yet for Vice, which has been missing out on some of the early awards action with critics groups.

Green Book, The Favourite and A Star is Born earned five nominations this morning, which was one short of my expectations. Green Book overperformed by my estimates with a nomination for its director, Peter Farrelly, and also locked up nods for Supporting Actor, Actor, Screenplay, and Film. Favourite missed out on Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, but still picked up two Supporting Actress nominations, Screenplay, Film, and Actress. Star did not get Sam Elliott nominated, but still two nominations each for both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and the film itself.

A few surprise nominees this morning, for me at least, were Black Panther going the distance for a nomination in the two music categories and Motion Picture Drama. The Actor: Drama race was a bit muddy for me, with John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate) and Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased) all earning nominations. Rosamund Pike was a welcome surprise for her fantastic turn in A Private War, and Nicole Kidman came back strong with a nod for her work in Destroyer. Also, John C. Reilly was a nominee for Stan and Ollie, which was not on my radar, either.

A couple of misses for me were Can You Ever Forgive Me, which did not get the Motion Picture Drama nod, and also First Man, which missed out on Film and Actor today. Ethan Hawke was also an unexpected snub this morning. He’s been lighting it up lately with wins across the board at critics prizes for his work in First Reformed. If Beale Street Could Talk also missed out on Score and Director noms. My predictions for Natalie Portman and the song “Wrapped Up” to be nominated were shot down. The film ended up with a goose egg. While BlacKkKlansman may have scored nominations in Film, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Director, it missed for Screenplay, which was a little surprising. Also the Poland film Cold War missed out for the Foreign Language Film category, another critics favorite over the last week. One last surprise was no Original Song nomination for Mary Poppins Returns, which otherwise scored very well today with four nominations.
