Glastonbury 2019 Will Be Renamed ‘The Variety Bazaar’

For all of its scope and scale, Glastonbury isn’t exactly imaginatively named, it’s just called where it is. So iconic is its status that the named ‘Glastonbury’ is far more commonly associated with the festival itself than the nearby which Worthy Farm borders. That in mind, renaming it seems like a bit of a fruitless exercise, but wait.

2018 is Glastonbury’s next fallow year, but when it comes back in 2019 it’s going to be called ‘The Variety Bazaar’, which sounds a bit like a thinly veiled cover for some kind of seedy sex shop. Part of the reason for this is that it’s also moving about 100 miles away from actual Glastonbury, making the old name kind of redundant. The festival will now be located somewhere in the Midlands, but it’s unclear where as yet. The site has moved in order to stop the original festival site from being reduced to a boot-beaten, muddy mess of empty ziplock bags, roaches and abandoned tents (if you’re one of those people, stop it).

Founder Michael Eavis acknowledged that he was taking a huge risk by renaming the festival, but also made the point that Glastonbury has always been risk ridden, and it’s still here. I’m not exactly clairvoyant, but I imagine that even after the name change, people are still going to be calling it Glastonbury.
