This PS1 Game Is Finally Leaving Japan

Originally released exclusively in Japan for the OG PlayStation in 1999, some 27 years ago, Geppy-X returns on July 16, 2026 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and S, and Steam as part of the Hi-Res Remastered Version.

Structured like a 1970s super robot television broadcast, the game runs through a full episode format, but rather than simply watching the show, you control it. Three young pilots combine forces to command the transforming super robot Geppy-X against the invading Space Demon Empire — complete with a mid-season mechanical upgrade. It’s a mid-season finale that won’t annoy you (for a change).

Combat centres on real-time switching between three forms: X1 offers balanced precision, X2 focuses on speed and screen-clearing attacks, and X3 delivers high-risk close-range power. Midway through the story, the machine evolves into Geppy-XX, unlocking new weapons and escalating encounters.

This Hi-Res Remastered Edition is a full restoration. Original Betacam master tapes have been re-digitised, visuals have been carefully upscaled, and the animation has been restored to its native 24 frames per second. Modern additions include rewind, rapid fire, quick save, CRT filter mode, and achievements. The original PlayStation version actually spanned four discs and featured more than 8,000 hand-drawn animation frames.

The release preserves the original 1999 voice cast, including Akira Kamiya, Shō Hayami, Shūichi Ikeda, Ichirō Nagai, and Gorō Naya. That’s alongside theme performances from Isao Sasaki, Akira Kushida, and Hironobu Kageyama.

Six additional modes, including boss rush and alternate scenarios, complete what is a pretty good package for mech fans.
