George RR Martin’s The Ice Dragon Getting An Animated Movie Adaptation

Warner Animation Group is working on a feature length animated adaptation of George RR Martin’s fantasy novel The Ice Dragon, as reported by Deadline. The Hollywood Reporter has also confirmed that Martin will produce the film, and there’s a slim possibility that he might also write the script. His manager, Vince Gerardis, will serve as executive producer, and that’s about all we know so far.

The Ice Dragon takes place in a war-torn land where a young girl named Adara befriends the titular beast of ice, which is made possible by the fact that she was born during the worst winter anyone could remember, making her attuned to creatures of the cold. She is eventually forced to team up with her newfound Ice Dragon friend to fight against an invading force of dragons who aren’t made of ice, in an effort to stop them from destroying the land she calls home.

I read the book a little while ago, and I can tell you it’s far more violent and grim than most children’s fantasy fare, but it remains to be seen how far the film will go in terms of mature content. But we know one thing for sure, which is that it certainly won’t be the next How to Train Your Dragon.

And before you get the wrong idea, you should be aware that this won’t be an animated Game of Thrones movie. Martin has explicitly stated that The Ice Dragon does not take place in the same world as A Song of Ice and Fire, although marketing materials for the book and even a sticker on the front cover of some editions have claimed otherwise. Either way, I would recommend reading The Ice Dragon before the film soars into your local multiplex.
